MacPhail Center for Music:
EXCELLENCE ISN'T EXCLUSIVE
Making the nation's largest community music school feel like it's actually for everyone
THE PROBLEM: MacPhail is one of the most respected community music schools in the country. That reputation was also the problem. People assumed a place that good wasn't a place for them. The perception was conservatory, not community: intense classical lessons for prodigy kids, nothing for the adult who just wants to finally learn guitar.
Two things were compounding it:
The "Too Good For You" Problem: Excellence read as exclusivity. Casual music fans self-selected out before they ever looked at a class list.
The Invisible Community Problem: There was no consistent social presence showing what MacPhail actually feels like. All of the warmth, humor, and humanity happening inside the building was staying inside the building.
THE OPPORTUNITY: We didn't need to argue that MacPhail is welcoming. We needed to show it. The people are the proof: instructors who will play Lady Gaga on a bassoon, students of every age and background, families who treat this place like a second home. Our job was to reframe excellence itself. Excellence doesn't mean "be the best." Excellence means being in a place that brings out your best.
THE SOLUTION: A content campaign built around four original series, designed to put MacPhail's people front and center and prove through joy, not messaging, that this is a place for everyone.

MEET MACPHAIL
The heart of MacPhail is its people. We built personal spotlights on instructors, students, and parents that got at why music matters to them, not just how it's taught. What they love. What music means to them. Why they chose this place. It turned out the faculty were the whole story: MacPhail's secret sauce, on camera, in their own words.
MUSIC MOOD MAKEOVER
We gave world-class musicians permission to have fun. Instructors reinterpreted famous songs in unexpected styles, across instruments and genres they had no business touching. Poker Face on bassoon. Norwegian Wood as flamenco. Superstition on cello. Blade Bird as break-core. Starfish & Coffee taught by a kid. It's the fastest way to prove that virtuosity and joy are not opposites.
THE JOY OF MUSIC
We hit the streets of Minneapolis and asked strangers a simple, human question: what song makes you the happiest? People lit up. They told stories. Then we asked them to sing a line. No brand pitch, no hard sell, just proof that music belongs to everybody who wants it.
MACPHAIL IN MOTION
Using MacPhail's own existing footage, we cut fast-paced hype videos celebrating the energy of the place: the joy of playing, the diversity of the community, the passion of students and the electricity of instructors. A visual argument for what MacPhail feels like when you walk in.
THE PROOF: A COMMUNITY YOU CAN FINALLY SEE
